The project

Three levels, one lift, and a staircase that stays the feature

This City Beach home runs over three levels on an 842 square metre block, and the owners wanted the lift to disappear into the joinery rather than announce itself.

The lift sits directly off the entry hall, beside an open timber staircase. Putting it there meant the stair could stay exactly as the architect drew it, as the sculptural centre of the house, while the lift took the daily work of moving people and shopping between the garage, the living level and the bedrooms.

A swing door in anodised aluminium with a frosted glass panel reads as a doorway rather than a lift. Closed, it lines up with the timber frame around it. That is the point. A home lift in a house like this should be the quietest thing in the room.

A cabin finished to match the house

Inside, the cabin is Classica in Similinox, a brushed Italian steel finish that holds its look under hard coastal light. Brushed stainless trims and control panel carry the same tone, and a matt white ceiling keeps the car bright without a glare line down the walls.

At 1100 by 1400 millimetres the car takes five people comfortably, or one person with a week of shopping. Ceiling height is 2100 millimetres, which is 100 millimetres above the industry standard and the difference you feel as soon as the doors close.

Through the house

The lift reads as part of the hallway, not as plant.

Why it works

Off the entry, not the stair

The lift takes the daily trips between the garage and the bedroom level, so the staircase stays a feature instead of a route.

A door, not a lift door

Anodised aluminium with frosted glass sits flush in the timber surround and reads as a doorway from across the hall.

Built for the coast

Similinox walls and brushed stainless trims hold their finish in a City Beach house a few streets back from the water.

Lift Shop has installed more than 12,000 home lifts across Australia, with a showroom in Belmont for Perth clients and an 8 year warranty on every lift.
