Set high atop the leafy Brisbane suburbs of Bulimba and Balmoral, this architecturally ambitious multi-residence development presented a unique challenge — connecting steeply elevated homes with garage-level entry while preserving panoramic views of the Brisbane skyline. With access and style both at the forefront, the developers brought in Lift Shop during the early planning stages to engineer a vertical transport solution that would be both functional and beautifully integrated.
The outcome is a compelling case study in how smart lift design can transform difficult terrain into an advantage, while reinforcing the aesthetic language of modern luxury living. Specifically, two of the four luxury residences in the development were fitted with customised ElfoLift 2 residential lifts — a then-new release known for its adaptable configurations and high-end performance.
Positioned at the summit of one of Brisbane’s most prestigious ridgelines, these residences were designed to take full advantage of their location, with floor-to-ceiling glass, open-plan interiors, and sweeping views toward the city skyline. But with great elevation comes logistical complexity — the garages were located on lower levels with limited space for stairs or ramps, making vertical access not just a luxury, but a necessity.
Working closely with the developers, architects, and builders, Lift Shop developed a bespoke elevator strategy that solved for both functionality and aesthetic integration. Our team understood early that the lifts would need to operate quietly, blend seamlessly into the architecture, and offer an elevated experience — literally and visually — for future homeowners.
One of the defining features of the site was its steep gradient. Traditional access solutions like staircases or ramps would have consumed excessive space and detracted from the open layout and minimalist design intent. In addition, there was a strong desire to maintain unobstructed sightlines across every level, particularly with so much glass integrated into the building façades.
This meant the elevator system not only had to be compact and space-efficient, but also visually light — avoiding bulky enclosures, visible machinery, or intrusive framework that could interrupt the architectural rhythm. From a technical perspective, flexibility in shaft dimensions and entry configurations was essential.
To meet these requirements, Lift Shop specified the ElfoLift 2 — a refined electric lift from our E Series range, designed for luxury homes. Unlike many conventional lifts, the ElfoLift 2 offers rear-positioned machinery, allowing the drive and running gear to be tucked away and hidden from view. This enabled clean, open shaft lines and optimised usable space on each floor.
The cabins were carefully configured with adjacent entry layouts that aligned with the homes’ internal flow, reducing visual bulk and improving circulation. These details allowed the lifts to feel like an intentional architectural feature rather than a retrofit necessity.
Because two homes would receive identical lift systems, consistency in aesthetic execution was a key part of the brief. Each cabin was designed with a unified selection of premium materials and finishes:
One of the most notable additions was the inclusion of stainless steel trim to the exterior cabin walls — a refinement not often considered in typical installations. However, since the lifts would be partially visible from outdoor walkways and windows, Lift Shop took the extra step to ensure the cabins looked as good from the outside as they did from within. It’s this attention to detail that sets Lift Shop apart in the realm of luxury home elevators.
Beneath the beautiful finishes, the ElfoLift 2 delivers smooth and quiet vertical movement. As an electric drive system, it offers excellent energy efficiency, low noise operation, and reliable day-to-day performance. Features like infrared safety curtains, battery backup, emergency lowering, and anti-skid protection all come standard, ensuring every ride is as safe as it is stylish.
The rear-mounted drive system also allows for easier maintenance access, without impacting the internal structure or visual design of the residences — a key consideration for homeowners who value minimal disruption.
With the successful installation of the ElfoLift 2 systems, residents of the Bulimba/Balmoral homes now enjoy:
Both the developer and construction team praised the collaborative process, noting that Lift Shop’s early involvement helped avoid retrofit challenges and allowed the lifts to be seamlessly integrated into the build. The result is a shining example of how domestic lifts can enhance homes from both a usability and design perspective.
